Simulating student learning for better AI tutoring

Microsoft Research introduced StudentSim, a research system that trains personalized AI student simulators from de-identified learner records to evaluate and improve AI tutors before real-learner testing. It is evaluated via StudentSimEval across chess, second-language English writing, and mathematics, measuring behavioral fidelity and guidance responsiveness, and outperforms leading baselines. StudentSim is not a product, is not deployed in classrooms, and is not intended to replace teachers.
